I have gone a little overboard on this post in that I have uploaded a whopping 22 pictures of Kate Winslet… I hesitate to say that this is borderline stalker, but I assure you I’m not… Nope I’m simply a fan, the more as a result of this exquisite shoot by Mario Testino in last month’s issue of British Vogue. I have fallen in love with these images of Kate – it’s the simplicity and austerity of the styling and that shock of ash blonde hair. Beautiful!
I was so inspired by this shoot that I decided she had to be the first of my blonde style icons… I’ll say nothing of the young starlets fashion faux pas given her impeccable choices in the last 6 years. I haven’t posted a picture of the dark green Givenchy velvet gown by Alexander Mcqueen in 1998, as it was a somewhat contentious choice at the time (although given this luminary designer’s tragic ending, perhaps on reflection a memorable one)… Instead I have picked some truly lovely images of a lady who is quite simply a modern-day, utterly feminine, silver screen icon.
There is no denying that this lady’s approach to red carpet style is somewhat formulaic – you only need to count how many one-shouldered numbers there are in these 22 shots but that said, it works. Being a curvy lady the one-shouldered silhouette certainly elongates and slims her figures, but it is more importantly her sublime choice of colour that shows a real understanding of what flatters her best.
Kate is the quintessential English Rose and she wears the pale sherberty tones of mint, and eggshell blue and jade so well. Equally the more electric tones of blue also leave one speechless. And if in doubt, she never fails to wow in timeless black. She never shies away from accentuating her shapely figure with bodycon styles and for that I love her all the more. She accessorizes impeccably, never overdone.
Kate is a woman’s woman. A woman who commands respect for her unnervingly powerful performances in films such as Iris, Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland, Titanic and a dozen other films… She is prolific, she is talented and she is most certainly one stylish lady. I have no hesitations in saluting her as my first blonde style icon – hear, hear for Kate!
